Painting for me is a meditative experience, where I connect with the method of applying, removing and exploring colour, form and texture on a flat surface. It is wordless and physical and each piece evolves from this process of discovery.
Original imagery / ideas may come from my daily meditation practice as ethereal concepts or seeds of possibilities, which then are made whole by the act of painting itself.
Each painting is a journey to bring that which is unknown into a solid physical experience.
Colour always features strongly in my paintings and I work with acrylic paint, collage, crayon and other media and I often use gold leaf and sometimes jewels (imitation).
The pieces for this exhibition have evolved from a series based on Hiranyagarbha (Sanskrit: हिरण्यगर्भ) literally the ‘golden womb’ or ‘golden egg’, (poetically translated as ‘universal womb’) which is the symbol of the source of the creation of the universe or the manifested cosmos in Vedic philosophy.
In these turbulent times it felt right to explore a more holistic and universal concept of the world, the universe, and the use of symbols can often connect us with the deeper parts of ourselves beyond the conscious mind.
The ‘Hiranyagarbha paintings were started in 2022 and developed into a ‘Container’ & ‘Balance’ series, exploring containing then opening up to possibilities of balance in difficult times. These themes continue to evolve and develop in my recent paintings.
I like people to create their own relationship to each piece, so many have very abstract titles, allowing you to discover your own connection and meaning.
