Hiraṇyagarbha (Sanskrit: हिरण्यगर्भः ; literally the ‘golden womb’ or ‘golden egg’, (poetically translated as ‘universal womb’) is the source of the creation of the universe or the manifested cosmos in Vedic philosophy, as well as an avatar of Vishnu in the Bhagavata Purana.

This painting is part of a series based on the golden egg or womb which is said to be the source of all that is manifest and unmanifest; and to be the god of gods and that which connects all things, creates all things and where all things return.

In these turbulent times it felt right to explore a more holistic and universal concept of the world, the universe, and the use of symbols can often connect us with the deeper parts of ourselves, beyond the conscious mind.

For me it is both bright and dark, both whole and broken. It is the potential for wholeness and for destruction.

What is it for you?
